Originally written in 1978, this posthumously published novel opens a window into Jordan's early career and foreshadows some of the world building and characters that live in his best-selling Wheel of Time series, which began with The Eye of the World (1990). Wulfgar is a leader of the Altaii, a proud and fierce horse people who thrive on the vast, sandy plains. When the nearby city of Lanta poses a threat, and the changing environment of the Plain grows less friendly, Wulfgar must find a way for his people to survive. The twin queens of Lanta, however, have designs on Wulfgar and want to subjugate him for their own evil purposes. It's a simple, straightforward heroic fantasy reminiscent of Jordan's early work as an author of Conan novels in the 1980s. There are prophecies, visions, and epic battles, but the appeal of the story is the glimpse into the past of a writer at the beginning of his career. Harriet P. McDougal, Jordan's wife and editor, offers a touching and entertaining foreword about the origin of the book and, incidentally, the beginnings of their relationship.--Craig Clark Copyright 2020 Booklist
