When Devon boards the plane for her class ski trip, she is angry. Still grieving her twin sister Emily's death the previous year, Devon feels uncomfortable in a cabin full of classmates closely tied to Emily, including Devon's former crush, whom she has publicly accused of killing her sister in a hit and run. What starts off as a tense flight quickly ramps up to horror when a creepy old woman turns out to be an immortal entity looking for a fresh young body to occupy. After some gruesome demonstrations of its brutality and mind-control abilities, the monster sits back and lets the teens choose whom to sacrifice, uncovering each student's secrets, pitting them against each other, and getting Devon ever closer to uncovering the person responsible for Emily's death. The ensuing power plays and arguments over bad behavior, worthiness, and punishment aren't particularly nuanced, but the claustrophobic setting, the violent and frightening creature, and the absolute dread of inevitability make this a fun and fast read for horror fans.

Secrets are revealed and drastic choices are made in this airborne thriller. Devon has had a rough year: Her twin sister, Emily, was killed in a hit-and-run on Halloween. The driver was never caught, although she suspects it was their classmate Jack. Now, on the flight to Colorado for their senior class ski trip, turbulence isn't the only thing she needs to worry about. A menacing fog emanates from an old woman onboard, leaving all the adults and small children alive but frozen in place. The old woman announces that the body she's possessed since 1948 is wearing out and she requires a new sacrifice--or they will all die. As the plane begins to plummet and come apart, the teens must vote on a sacrifice. The supernatural being rights the plane and gives them three hours to decide. In the meantime, they are shown everyone's worst secrets on the in-flight entertainment system. This offers a chance to uncover Emily's killer--but can the group wait to hear all the reveals, or will they vote sooner? The story's pacing, tied to the 4-hour flight, is strong. The central mystery and individual characters' histories are slowly revealed, propelling readers onward but allowing them space to make their own predictions. The story twists realistic themes like grief, human fallibility, and angst with the supernatural into an exciting whole. Characters seem to default to White. A flight takes a nail-biting detour in search of the truth. (Horror. 12-18) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

Gr 9 Up--In this paranormal horror thriller, a teen trying to move on after her twin sister's unexpected death must face an otherworldly horror while on a flight for her senior ski trip. Devon and her classmates settle in for what's expected to be a short flight when an elderly and seemingly human passenger named Dorothy uses her knitting needles to murder a crew member, and then forces the high school class to choose who to sacrifice among themselves to be her new host. As time runs out, the classmates' secrets are revealed--including who was responsible for Devon's sister's death by hit-and-run. Parker doesn't shy away from the grotesque, and some scenes with the immortal Dorothy are genuinely horrific. The reveal of the teens' darkest secrets suggests that Devon might have just as much to fear from her class as from Dorothy. Most characters read as white, and an LGBTQIA+ reveal late in the book is clumsily handled. VERDICT A fast, engaging read, recommended for large collections and where horror is popular.--Kelsey Socha

A high school senior's class skiing trip turns deadly in this otherworldly thriller by Parker (Smash & Grab). Devon Marsh is trying to move on after her twin sister Emily is killed in a hit-and-run. While she's certain their classmate Jack is to blame for Emily's death, the police rule him out as a suspect. Five months later, boarding a plane to Colorado for her senior class skiing trip, her friends encourage her to avoid Jack. But the vendetta becomes the least of her worries when, during the flight, elderly passenger Dorothy murders a flight attendant with knitting needles. "An immortal being without an immortal body" claims to have possessed Dorothy, and says they need a new host. Facing threat of death, the high schoolers must choose the new vessel among themselves before the flight ends; as their darkest secrets come to light, the teens struggle over turning against each other versus fighting for group survival. Parker's intense adventure, a treat for horror fans, is chock-full of cinematic action and paranormal elements, combining in a hair-raising flight from hell. Most characters read as white. Ages 12--up. Agent: Lucienne Diver, Knight Agency. (Oct.)
