Big Truck Day

A community bustles about in preparation for a big day ahead. A bookmobile and other vehicles are planning to convene in a parking lot. Everyone gets ready for Big Truck Day. Two children and an adult, all light-skinned, eat breakfast; meanwhile, a diverse group of adults load up a truck with books. (The accompanying text, "Start at the station and fill up the tank," feels slightly confusing; though it's a metaphor for fueling up for the day, it feels out of place in an otherwise literal book.) Then trucks and bikes head through the town until arriving at their destination--"It's the library at last," reads the text. People hold clipboards and sort books while trucks get settled. The simple rhymes are punctuated with onomatopoeia in a large font as vehicles travel and people gather and happily find books. The book is colorful, using seemingly every color of the rainbow, evoking the feeling of a busy summer day. Though the narrative is a little disjointed, the depiction of a diverse, supportive community is heartening, and spreads filled with vehicles will delight readers--a look at the inside of a tractor is especially enjoyable. Backmatter describes the history of the bookmobile and includes photos of various book delivery methods across the world. (This book was reviewed digitally.) A fun introduction to bookmobiles.
